Police on Thursday arrested Nepali Congress lawmaker Sunil Sharma on the charge of acquiring a fake academic certificate.
A team from the Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police arrested the lawmaker from Golfutar in Kathmandu.
Police sources said Sharma was arrested for an investigation after a certificate said to be issued from an institution in India was revealed to be fake. Sharma, who is the owner of a medical college, had pursued MBBS based on the certificate.
He was elected to the House of Representatives from Morang-3 in the last year’s polls. Sharma is considered close to the Shekhar Koirala camp in the Congress.
Meanwhile, police said it has informed the Speaker on the arrest of the lawmaker.
