The government has projected Nepal’s economy to grow by 4.61 percent in the current fiscal year 2024-25, according to the Economic Survey presented in the Federal Parliament on Thursday.

The size of Nepal’s gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to reach Rs 6.107 trillion, Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel said. Of the total GDP, the contribution of the agriculture sector is projected at 25.16 percent, industry at 12.83 percent, and services at 62.01 percent. Per capita gross national income has increased to USD 1,517. The average consumer inflation stands at 4.72 percent.

Federal government expenditure rose by 4.7 percent, while revenue collection increased by 12.6 percent during the first eight months of the fiscal year. The federal fiscal deficit stood at Rs 16.19 billion, compared to Rs 70.36 billion in the same period last year. Public debt has reached Rs 2.676 trillion, equivalent to 43.8 percent of GDP.

Remittance inflow surged by 9.4 percent, reaching Rs 1.051 trillion, and exports rose by 57.2 percent, while imports increased by 11.2 percent. Nepal’s foreign exchange reserves reached a record high, sufficient to cover 14.3 months of imports.

Access to electricity has reached 99 percent of the population, with installed capacity of electricity generation standing at 3,602 megawatts. Internet penetration is reported at 144.23 percent, and 72 percent of households have access to digital television.

Meanwhile, the Public Enterprises Review 2025 shows that of the 45 state-owned enterprises, 28 made profits, 15 incurred losses, and 2 remained closed in the fiscal year 2023/24. Net profit declined by 12.88 percent to Rs 42.62 billion, while net loss increased by 8.65 percent to Rs 3.63 billion. The government’s dividend income from public enterprises fell from Rs 13.75 billion to Rs 8.83 billion year-on-year.
