Exhibit on Indigenous resistance and land rights
The pieces capture the ongoing struggle of the Tamang community in Bojheni.
Post Report
A photo and writing exhibition titled ‘We Belong to the Land and Soil’ opened Tuesday at Outside Studio, Dhobighat. The show sheds light on Indigenous resistance, land rights, and the role of Indigenous women and girls as frontline defenders.
Organised by Focus for Indigenous Girls (FIG Nepal), the exhibit runs until today and features works by Indigenous Media Fellows Sharana Sherpa (photography) and Babita Tamang (writing). The pieces capture the ongoing struggle of the Tamang community in Bojheni, Shankharapur-3, where the Upper-Tamakoshi Hydropower Project is expanding.

“This exhibit is our effort as young Indigenous women and girls to stand beside our Tamang grandmothers, sisters and brothers defending what is rightfully theirs,” organisers said in a statement.
Vice-president of FIG, Akina Singh Suwal, noted, “Our understanding of land is deeper than just a piece of earth’s surface which we own legally. Through this exhibition, we aim to build solidarity with Tamang women of Bojheni for their autonomy and self-determination.”
Alongside photographs and writings, the exhibition also showcases zines created by Indigenous youths. One of the community leaders Raj Man Shyangbo of Bojheni said, “No one has documented our struggle till now. We are very grateful to witness this display of our land and struggle. This is a historic event for us.”
