Bishal Bazaar in corruption scandal
The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority on Friday filed a corruption case against eight officials from Bishal Bazaar Company Limited
A charge sheet filed at the Special Court states that the accused caused a loss of Rs 94.5 million to the state-owned company by leasing out its stalls to only a select group of the company shareholders and renewing the rent contracts indefinitely. Ashok Jib Tuladhar, Nurmal Kumar Dhanuk, Gautam Lal Shrestha, Pramod Agrawal, Bhawani Raj Pandey, Bijaya Kumar Baniya, and Basudev Bista are also accused in the scam.
CIAA said even the state-owned Nepal Food Corporation and Agriculture Inputs Company Limited were denied stalls inside the Bishal Bazaar Complex. The Nepal Government owns 34 per cent of share in the Bishal Bazaar Company while NFC and AICL share significant share of the company.
CIAA Spokesperson Shreedhar Sapkota said out of 360 outlets in the complex, 247 were subleased. As a result, both shopkeepers and the shareholders have been facing loss while only a few people were reaping all the benefits.
