Former Kumaris will receive a monthly allowance of Rs 10,000 from the Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
The metropolis announced allowances for the former Living Goddesses recognising them as an integral part of the ancient city’s cultural heritage.
Starting mid-July in the next fiscal year, the metropolis will disburse perks to eight of them who once held the prestigious position of Kumari and were worshipped by millions.
“This is a gesture to extend our tribute to the former Kumaris,” said KMC chief Laxman Aryal. “This is also an initiative to preserve our cultural heritage, which is one of KMC’s main priorities.” An annual budget of Rs 1.2 million from KMC’s Heritage Preservation Fund has been earmarked for the former Kumaris’ welfare scheme.
“We hail the KMC decision as a great step towards cultural preservation,” Gautam Shakya, chairman of the Indrajatra Management Committee, said. Also demanded for the distinguished persons are training and job opportunities.
The sitting Kumari receives a monthly allowance of Rs 40,000 from the government. Kumaris are believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Taleju (Durga).
