Prime Minister Sushila Karki said on Wednesday that the government is committed to holding the upcoming House of Representatives election in a free and fair manner.
Speaking at a ceremony to honour national luminary Shankhadhar Sakhwa in Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur, PM Karki expressed confidence that all political parties and sectors of society would support the government in ensuring credible elections.
“It is well known that the government has been tasked with holding the House of Representatives elections on March 5, 2026,” Karki said. “We are responsible for addressing the legitimate voices of Gen Z in line with the Constitution. The government will create an environment where Nepalis can vote without fear, strengthening democracy, advancing prosperity, and safeguarding citizens’ rights.”
Karki expressed sorrow over the deaths and injuries during the Gen Z-led protests on September 8 and 9.
She said the government would move forward with the process of including the Nepal Sambat year on currency notes after consulting relevant authorities.
According to her, the government’s decision to mention Nepal Sambat in official documents shows its intent to promote and institutionalise the calendar. She directed ministries to implement it effectively in government offices and cooperate with the Shankhadhar Sakhwa Foundation to monitor its use.
Highlighting Sakhwa’s contribution to social justice, she said Nepal Sambat, begun in 936 AD, was not established by royal decree or military victory but emerged from the public’s recognition of a trader’s sacrifice and philanthropy, making it a calendar rooted in social welfare.
Karki urged Nepalis to follow Sakhwa’s example of prioritising national interest over personal or party gains to end poverty and inequality.
