Government, family reach three-point agreement over Bara girl’s killing
The deal includes reviewing laws on serious crimes, constructing the girl’s bust, and holding funeral rites according to family customs.Post Report
The government and the family of a girl who was killed in ward 1 of Jeetpursimara Sub-metropolitan City of Bara have reached a three-point agreement.
The agreement was reached during talks at the home ministry on Saturday evening between Home Minister Sudan Gurung, other government ministers and officials, and the girl’s parents.
Under the agreement, the government will review existing legal provisions on offences and punishments for serious crimes and submit a report with recommendations for possible amendments within seven days. The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs will form a seven-member committee to carry out the review.
The government has also agreed to take steps to build a bust of the girl, as sought by her family. The Ministry of Infrastructure Development will coordinate with the local unit to facilitate its construction.
The family will also be allowed to conduct the girl’s funeral according to its customs and traditions, according to the home minister’s secretariat.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the government by Gurung; Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal; Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovita Gautam; Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security Sita Badi; and Agriculture, Forest and Environment Minister Gita Chaudhary. Kathmandu Chief District Officer Ishwar Raj Paudel also took part in the talks.
The girl’s parents, Manoj Kumar Chaudhary and Manmati Chaudhary, signed the agreement on behalf of the family.
The agreement commits the government to advancing the judicial process in the case while addressing the family’s demands.
