China has congratulated former Chief Justice Sushila Karki on becoming Nepal’s interim prime minister, saying it stands ready to work with Kathmandu to advance bilateral ties.
“China congratulates Sushila Karki on becoming Prime Minister of Nepal’s interim government,” the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in a statement on Sunday. “China, as always, respects the development path chosen independently by the people of Nepal. We stand ready to promote the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, enhance exchanges and cooperation in various fields, and further advance bilateral relations.”
Karki was sworn in as head of the interim government on Friday, following violent protests that left 51 dead and forced the formation of a new leadership. Her government is mandated to hold general elections on March 5, 2026 and handover the leadership to the elected government.
Various other countries, including the United States and India, have welcomed Karki’s appointment.
In a statement, the US Embassy in Kathmandu on Sunday morning commended President Ramchandra Paudel and youth leaders for their commitment to a democratic solution, while recognising the Nepali Army and Chief of Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel for helping facilitate a peaceful transition. Washington said it looks forward to working with the interim government as preparations for fresh elections move forward.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended congratulations on Saturday. Addressing a mass meeting in Manipur, Modi called Nepal a “close and trusted friend” and praised Karki’s appointment as an example of women’s empowerment. Earlier in the day, he said India remains firmly committed to Nepal’s peace, progress, and prosperity.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs had also welcomed the interim government immediately after Karki’s swearing-in, pledging continued cooperation as a close neighbour and long-term partner.
Karki’s appointment marks the first time Nepal has a female prime minister.
