The Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police on Thursday arrested 50 individuals, including two Chinese nationals and a Filipino, for allegedly operating an illegal call centre at Ekantakuna of Lalitpur.
Acting on a tip-off about illegal activities being carried out from the call centre, the CIB raided the premises on Thursday.
CIB spokesperson, Hobindra Bogati, informed that 50 people including five women were arrested after a raid. According to Bogati, the group had rented an entire house to run the call centre.
“The call centre, run by the Chinese nationals, is found to be involved in luring Nepalis with false promises to invest in fraudulent schemes,” he said. “At present, we have detained two Chinese, one Filipino, and 47 Nepalis. We are taking them to the Lalitpur District Court for a remand.”
The centre was allegedly involved in illegal activities, including scamming people through false promises and encouraging investment in cryptocurrency, which is illegal in Nepal.
Further details will emerge after further investigations, the police said.
