Agitating doctors have called off their protest after reaching a six-point deal with the government on Sunday.
The Nepal Medical Association has postponed its strike against police assault on a doctor following an agreement forged during talks between representatives of the association and the government.
Lochan Karki, president of the Nepal Medical Association, said the government has agreed to study and amend the Working Procedure for Security of VVIP-2077 within a week and implement it immediately.
Similarly, it has been agreed to take action against the policeman who assaulted the doctor during the President’s convoy and to investigate and take legal action against the others involved as well.
The umbrella body of medical and dental doctors and the government have also agreed to fully implement the laws formulated for the safety of health institutions and health workers and strengthen them further.
Doctors halted services at all hospitals across the country, except for emergency care, on Sunday morning, in protest against a police assault on a doctor.
On Friday, police assaulted Dr Janith Singh, a senior orthopaedic surgeon of the National Trauma Centre, for walking during President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s convoy on its way back to Sheetal Niwas.
Dr Singh was assaulted by on-duty police personnel while he was heading to the hospital to join his duty. He has sustained head injuries and is currently kept under observation in the Intensive Care Unit.
Police personnel also attacked other medical officers who had blocked the traffic for half an hour protesting against the attack.
