Nepal Police on Saturday suspended a senior head constable on the charge of assaulting a doctor during the President’s convoy.
Shambhu Jung Gurung, deployed at Metropolitan Police Circle, Janasewa, has been accused of baton-charging senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr Janith Singh of National Trauma Centre for walking during President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s motorcade on its way back to Sheetal Niwas.
Nepal Police Spokesperson Posh Raj Pokharel said Kathmandu Police Range suspended Gurung for an investigation into the incident.
Dr Singh was assaulted by on-duty police personnel while he was heading to the hospital to join his duty. He has sustained head injuries and is currently kept under observation in the Intensive Care Unit.
Police personnel also attacked other medical officers who had blocked the traffic for half an hour protesting against the attack.
The incident has sparked public outrage. A group of activists including doctors protested at Maitighar Mandal in the Capital on Saturday demanding action against the assaulters.
Doctors at Bir Hospital and National Trauma Centre have stalled some services indefinitely, demanding that actions be taken against the police personnel who assaulted doctors indiscriminately on Friday.
The doctors have decided to not partake in Outpatient Department (OPD) services at Bir Hospital and National Trauma Centre until the perpetrators are booked.
