Doctors at Bir Hospital and National Trauma Centre have stalled services indefinitely, demanding that actions be taken against the police personnel who assaulted doctors indiscriminately on Friday.
The doctors have decided to not partake in Outpatient Department (OPD) services at Bir Hospital and National Trauma Centre until the perpetrators have been punished.
However, services for patients who have already been admitted will not be obstructed, informed Dr Seshraj Ghimire, president of the Resident Association of National Academy of Medical Sciences (RAN).
“We demand action against those who were involved in assaulting our doctors indiscriminately,” said Ghimire. “However, the patients who have already been admitted, or are undergoing treatment shall not, and will not be deprived of services.”
Ghimire added that they would be compelled to resort to further stringent protests if their call for action is ignored.
Doctors at Bir Hospital and National Trauma Centre had protested on Friday after police personnel baton-charged a doctor for walking along the road during a President’s convoy.
Dr Janith Singh was assaulted by on-duty police personnel while he was heading to the hospital to join his duty.
Dr Singh sustained head injuries and is currently kept under observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Police personnel also attacked other medical officers who had blocked the traffic for half an hour protesting against the attack.
The incident has demoralised the medical officers, Ghimire said.
Traffic police, on Friday, had halted all traffic during a convoy of President Bidya Devi Bhandari while she was en route and returning from the Parliament.
