Locals of Barpak have expressed their dissatisfaction over the delay in the construction of an earthquake memorial park in Barpak, the epicentre of the 2015 Earthquake.
The park is being constructed in memory of the people killed in the earthquake.
Only around 26 percent of the construction works have been completed in the last 16 months. Jit Bahadur Ghale, a resident of Barpak, said the construction of the park has been going at a snail’s pace right from the beginning. “In monsoon, workers cannot work due to the rain. During winter they say they cannot gain momentum due to cold conditions,” said Ghale.
Locals, however, hope that the area will be developed as a tourist destination after the completion of the park. Kedar Thapa, an engineer of the District Project Implementation Unit, said that they are constructing roads and instaling retaining walls in the park’s area.
“We will start the construction of Mandala in a few days. We could not work as per the expectation due to geographical remoteness and weather conditions,” said Thapa.
The government has allocated Rs 10 million to construct the park on 216 ropanies of land. The District Project Implementation Unit of the National Reconstruction Authority had decided to build the park in memory of the people killed in the quake. President Bidya Devi Bhandari had laid the foundation stone for the memorial during her visit in April 2016.
