Women trained as masons build houses in Eklephant

Women have started to construct houses after taking mason training in Majhigaun, Sindhupalchok.
These days Manju Majhi of Eklephant in Chautara Sangachokgadhi is busy in constructing house after taking training in masonry. “I have been helping my neighbour to construct house. I have an aim to help all people of Eklephant to construct their houses,” said Manju.
Manju said she also have been providing training to other women of the village. She said there are more than 20 women masons in Eklephant. Another mason Gopini Majhi said she has been generating good income.
“Manju had trained me to construct the house. In comparison, more women masons are involved in reconstruction than men here,” she said.
Mason Dil Kumari Majhi said women masons have already constructed 15 quake resistant houses in Eklephant. People are constructing houses at Gairithok, Pauwathok, Eklephant and Bhimtar areas. Around 700 houses are being built in those villages. World Vision Housing Project Co-ordinator Dwarika Ghimire said they have provided masonry training to 40 people in Sindhupalchok. “We provided special masonry training to women here. Now, there’s no scarcity of masons in the villages,” said Ghimire.
After receiving masonry training, women don’t have to stay jobless in their villages. “These days, women have started to generate income here,” said Ghimire.
