The Nepali embassy in Kuwait last year dispatched more than Rs52 million meant to be issued to the families of deceased migrant workers in compensation, insurance payment and outstanding salary and allowance from their companies.

The sum (157,786 Kuwaiti dinar), collected from the employing companies, was sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at different times before being handed out to the families of 31 migrant workers, who lost their lives in the Gulf state, the embassy said in a statement.

The embassy was actively involved in the compensation recovery process, which included taking legal measures in some cases to make the concerned party pay appropriate compensation.

“The embassy collects the money from the concerned company on behalf of the deceased migrant worker and sends it to the ministry,” said Tirtha Wagle, the ministry under secretary.

“The ministry then issues the amount to the concerned family through District Administration Office.”

According to the ministry, nearly half of the families have already received the money through the concerned district office.
