As many as 88 political parties have applied to the Election Commission to take part in the provincial and federal elections scheduled to be held on November 26 and December 7 under the proportional representation (PR) system.
However, 95 parties have been registered with the EC to participate in the first-past-the-post electoral system.
The political parties including the Madhes Tarai Forum, Madhes Samata Party and Nepali Greens Party, which had registered for participation in direct elections, did not apply for the proportional election, said an EC official.
According to the EC, three major parties Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and the CPN (Maoist Centre) have expressed their interest to join both the elections and in all the provinces.
