A woman died of scrub typhus in Chitwan district on Saturday. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed yet.

The woman was admitted to the Bharatpur-based Central Hospital on July 24 where she breathed her last during the course of treatment on August 26, Saturday, according to Ram Kumar KC of the District Public Health Office.

“Number of people suffering from scrub typhus has increased lately in the district,” he said, adding, “Two people had already lost their lives to the disease.”

As many as 133 persons were found infected with scrub typhus during the past one month in the district.

Scrub typhus is an infectious mite-borne disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, and if untreated, could lead to death.

Fever, headache and measles-like rash around the neck are the common symptoms of the disease.
