The Department of Supply Management and Protection of Consumers Interest sealed on Saturday, Naya Bazaar Multi Venue—a banquet and an event venue in the Valley, on the charge of selling substandard food items posing risk to the consumers’ health.

The department led joint monitoring team took action against the eatery business while the banquet was serving food during an annual general meeting of Sthapit Yojana Multipurpose Cooperative. Following the incident, the department has barred Naya Bazaar Multi Venue from carrying out its business and asked the proprietor to be present at the department within three days.

Madhav Timilsina, president of the Consumer Rights Investigation Forum, said the party palace was found serving stale meat with musty smell. “In addition, the banquet had been using expired spices and ingredients to prepare the meals,” said Timilsina who also joined the inspection team.

Even with the popularity of party venues, the government authorities hardly cross-check the quality of food that these outlets sell to their customers.

Timilsina stressed on the need for regular monitoring of the business to safeguard consumers from facing possible health hazards.

Apart from the banquet, the department also sealed Sagarmatha Dairy operating in Nayabasti, Jorpati. The dairy was found doing business without renewing its operating licence, selling expired ghee and ghee adulterated with vegetable fat.

Likewise, the department also grilled a large number of cold store outlets on the charge of selling unhygienic meat items.

A few days ago, the department sealed New ML Cold Store in Kupondole and asked the shop owner for clarification within three days.

Soaltee Cold Store Top, Taja Ranga Meat Shop, Gita Meat Shop and Pulchowk Cold Store in Pulchowk; Local Kukhura Pasal, Dev Fresh Meat Shop, Fresh Meat Shop and New Samjhana Meat Shop in Jawalakhel; Poonam Meat Store in Thapathali; Baruwa Chicken Suppliers and Chicken Spot in Shankhamul and Chaudhary Meat Shop in Jwagal of Lalitpur also faced the department’s scrutiny.

Apart from selling unhygienic products, most of these shops were selling meat unfit for consumption along with failing to update the measuring devices and renewing their operating licences.
