Nepal reports 3,540 cases as rapid antigen tests added to daily infection tallies
According to the Health Ministry, the countrywide death toll has now reached 11,735 and the number of active cases stands at 83,999.Post Report
Nepal on Sunday reported 3,049 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours taking the nationwide infection tally to 950,441.
Similarly, 491 people tested positive in a total of 3,235 antigen tests, according to the Health Ministry.
As of Sunday, 5,219,506 PCR and 961,091 antigen tests have been carried out across the country.
A total of 9,910 PCR tests were performed in the past 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry.
In its regular situation report, the ministry did not mention the death toll over the past 24 hours. It, however, added 32 previously unreported deaths to the tally on Sunday.
The countrywide death toll has reached 11,735 since the pandemic began.
The number of active cases stands at 83,999 and the rate of infection positivity is 30.76 percent.
According to the World Health Organization, if the positivity rate, or the number of tests that return positive for every 100 tests, is more than 5 percent, the pandemic is supposed to be beyond control.
According to the ministry, 854,707 infected people have recovered from the disease so far; 6,359 of them in the last 24 hours.
Nepal, on January 7, had reported 24 new Omicron cases. Earlier in December, three Omicron cases were confirmed.
The Health Ministry said tests conducted on 250 samples from among the 1,146 infected in the Nepali month of Poush had shown S-gene dropouts. Gene-sequencing performed on 24 samples returned Omicron results in all of them.
Kathmandu Valley recorded 1,778 new infections in the past 24 hours. Of these, 1,232 cases were confirmed in Kathmandu, 379 in Lalitpur and 167 in Bhaktapur.
In the past 24 hours, 294 new infections were recorded in Province 1, 107 in Madhesh Pradesh, 1,950 in Bagmati, 302 in Gandaki, 180 in Lumbini, 21 in Karnali and 181 in Sudurpaschim.
According to the data released by the ministry, 18 districts are home to more than 500 active cases each and other 18 districts host more than 200 active cases each.
On Sunday, 285 individuals infected with the virus were being treated in intensive care units across the country. Another 51—four in Province 1, 41 in Bagmati, two each in Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim—were on ventilator support.
Nepal on Saturday reported 3,318 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases and six deaths. Similarly, 4,807 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases and 10 deaths were reported on Friday and 5,816 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases and 15 deaths were recorded on Thursday.
