Publisher’s note
Whenever attempts have been made to silence the voice of the people, Kantipur Publications has stood firm as an advocate for democracy. In a happy coincidence in Nepal’s history, Kantipur Publications, the custodian of democracy, came into being on Falgun 7—the day democracy itself was born. Today, Kantipur, which has not only witnessed Nepal’s political transformations but has also been their integral part, enters its 34th year.
Whenever attempts have been made to silence the voice of the people, Kantipur Publications has stood firm as an advocate for democracy. During the Maoist armed conflict, it defended human rights; during the royal regime, it stood for multiparty democracy; after the peace agreement, it supported constitution-making; and after the promulgation of the constitution, it has consistently stood for good governance.
Freedom of expression, human rights, and the rule of law are not just words—they are the lifeblood of democracy. Every society needs a strong press to enable citizens to exercise their rights, and Kantipur has made this its mission.
Kantipur Publications has exposed irregularities and misconduct that happen not only under authoritarian rule but also beneath the cloak of democracy. Many in positions of power have abused authority to suppress scrutiny. As a result, Kantipur has faced repeated retaliatory attacks, including during the unrest of September 9.
While demanding action against those who attacked public institutions and media houses, Kantipur has also prioritised holding accountable those responsible for repressing unarmed protesters. No matter the cost, it remains unwavering in its commitment to professional journalism.
Kantipur does not distinguish between old and new faces. Its only concern
is exposing wrongdoing. This pursuit of truth in turn strengthens public awareness.
After every movement, the nation stands transformed. Nepali society hopes that following last September’s “Gen Z movement”, the country will again turn towards good governance, transparency, effective public service delivery, and accountability. Also, with the movement’s agenda now being institutionalised, Nepal has entered the electoral phase.
Parties and leaders who win the people’s mandate must ensure good governance, boost investment, create jobs, strengthen the economy, and guide the nation towards prosperity. Meanwhile, Kantipur will continue to provide accurate information and constructive critique.
Kantipur Publications’ achievements are the result of our informed readers, responsible businesses, active advertisers, and the tireless efforts of our journalists and associated staff. We are grateful to all of them. In the journey ahead, their trust and feedback will continue to guide us.
Thank you.
