Budget-friendly neighbourhoods for Nepali students in Magdeburg
From campus district to quiet suburbs, a guide to student living in this central German city.Post Report
Sudenburg
Sudenburg is a residential district located in the southwestern part of Magdeburg. It is well connected to the rest of the city by frequent tram and bus services.
Pros
It is known for having lots of supermarkets, making it convenient for students to access groceries. Similarly, local markets are frequently organised, giving Sudenburg a vibrant community atmosphere.
Cons
Locals complain that the area is dirty and that the amenities are poorly maintained compared to other parts of Magdeburg.
Buckau
Located on the western bank of the Elbe River, Buckau is described as ‘District of Arts’. It lies directly opposite Rotehorn Park, one of the largest green spaces in Magdeburg.

Pros
The area’s architecture is its main attraction, with houses and buildings from the mid-to-late 19th century, known as the Gründerzeit period. With multiple public transportation options, commuting from Buckau is easier.
Cons
The density of grocery shops and markets is lower in this area. As a waterfront neighbourhood, it can get crowded on weekends and holidays.
Werder
Werder is located on an island in the Elbe River between the Old Town and the eastern banks. It is an urban sanctuary known for its historic villas, lush parklands, and a peaceful atmosphere.

Pros:
It is a short commute to the main university campus or the city centre. Residents enjoy direct access to Rotehornpark, the city’s largest green space.
Cons:
Limited amenities can be a drawback, as the island has few supermarkets or late-night shops, requiring a trip across the bridge for basic errands.
Cracau
Cracau is considered one of Magdeburg’s most relaxed residential neighbourhoods, situated on the eastern bank of the Elbe River just south of the Elbauenpark.

Pros:
It offers a short and scenic commute to the city centre via the Sternbrücke (Star Bridge) or the tram network.
Cons:
While generally affordable, the commute to the main Otto von Guericke University campus can take slightly longer than living in the more central areas.
Herrenkrug
Herrenkrug is located on the far northeastern edge of the city. It is known for its green spaces, historic horse racing track, and its unique status as a self-contained forest campus for the University of Applied Sciences.

Pros:
It is a preferred destination for outdoor enthusiasts, as it features the Elbauenpark, the Herrenkrug woods, and extensive cycling paths along the Elbe.
Cons:
Isolation is the primary trade-off; because it sits on the outskirts, the neighbourhood can feel disconnected from the city’s social pulse and nightlife.
