Sukhawati Store, a social enterprise and charitable thrift store based in Banasthali, Kathmandu, concluded its annual ‘Hamro Pani Dashain’ initiative on Friday. The event, held at the store premises, provided essential groceries to 55 economically vulnerable families identified by donors and local ward chairpersons.
Each family received a package worth around Rs3,000, which included 25 kilograms of rice, one kilogram of salt, one kilogram of sugar, one litre of oil, and 200 grams of tea. The initiative was made possible through revenue from selling donated pre-loved clothes and goods.
Chitra Dahal founded the Sukhawati store as a charitable enterprise that collects, processes, and sells donated second-hand items such as clothing, toys, shoes, bags and kitchen utensils. All income is directed towards covering operational costs and funding charitable activities.
“This event is one of four charitable initiatives we run annually through the store’s income,” said Sajina Nepali, campaign officer at Sukhawati. “Along with ‘Hamro Pani Dashain’, we also organise ‘Warm Love’, provide health staff support for Manav Sewa Ashram, and extend emergency relief during crises.”
This year’s Dashain programme highlighted the organisation's mission of combining sustainability with compassion. It gives new life to pre-loved goods while ensuring no one is left behind during times of celebration.
An identical outreach event is scheduled for September 29, 2025, in Pokhara. Ten families will receive the same festival support package.
