Banchare Danda locals obstruct waste disposal
People’s representatives join protests demanding relocation of locals.Post Report
Locals and people’s representatives of various political parties of Kakani Rural Municipality on Monday obstructed the transportation of solid waste generated from Kathmandu Valley to the landfill site in Banchare Danda.
Ghannath Bajgain, ward chair of Kakani-3, said they were forced to halt waste dumping after their repeated demands to relocate locals went unheard.
A group of people including ward chair Bajgain has stopped the vehicles laden with garbage in the Aletaar area near the dumping site.
Bajgain said the locals are annoyed due to haphazard garbage disposal.
A few days ago, the rural municipality decided to charge an entry fee for vehicles carrying garbage. The people’s representatives say they halted waste disposal after a plea from locals to consider their condition.
“The rural municipality had decided to collect a fee from garbage trucks. We [people's representatives] also joined the protest after locals took to the streets demanding a halt to waste disposal.”
Locals residing nearby the landfill have been disrupting garbage disposal time and again putting forth various demands.
The metropolis started dumping waste at the Banchare Danda landfill last year. Earlier to that, the garbage was disposed of at the Sisdole landfill.
In 2005, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City started dumping garbage collected from the Valley at Sisdole, spread over 740 ropanis (37.65 hectares) of land, with an agreement that the site would be used for three years. But the waste was dumped for over 17 years.
Kathmandu Valley generates 1,200 tonnes of solid waste every day. Nearly 60 percent of the waste is generated by the Kathmandu metropolis itself.
