Landslide puts five houses at risk in Kathmandu’s Tarakeshwar
Around 50 households affected after excavation for a house construction project triggers slope failure in Jarankhu, locals say.Post Report
Around 50 households have been affected by a landslide at Ashtaman Tole, Jarankhu, in ward 6 of Tarakeshwar Municipality after earth was excavated for house construction.
Locals said five houses are at direct risk from the landslide, while the debris has also made it difficult for residents to move along the neighbourhood road.
According to residents, the problem began after a bulldozer was used to cut into the slope for the construction project. Excavation and construction have been underway for about two years, but locals complain that the work has progressed slowly.

They also said soil and sand from the construction site have repeatedly been dumped along the road, making it difficult to walk or drive through the area. The site is not regularly cleared, and the road has not been properly maintained, they said.
Locals identified the house under construction as belonging to Kiran Rijal. They have accused the construction side of failing to take adequate precautions during excavation, leaving residents to bear the consequences.
They have called on the construction side to remove the accumulated soil, clear and restore the road, and take immediate measures to stabilise the slope.
Residents said the area had not experienced such problems before the excavation began. They have also repeatedly informed local representatives about the landslide and the condition of the road, but say no concrete action has followed.

The deputy mayor, however, has assured residents that the problem will be looked into, according to locals.
The neighbourhood improvement committee has also been holding discussions with the construction side over possible measures to address the problem. Residents are demanding immediate action from both the authorities and the construction side to control the landslide and ensure safe access through the neighbourhood.
