RPP evaluates causes of defeat
The Rastriya Prajatantra Party has pointed out a weak party organisation, “illusions created over the party’s principle by some forces”, and a dearth of resources as the main reasons behind its poor show in the first phase of local level elections held last week. The Rastriya Prajatantra Party has pointed out a weak party organisation, “illusions created over the party’s principle by some forces”, and a dearth of resources as the main reasons behind its poor show in the first phase of local level elections held last week.
An emergency Central Executive Committee meeting of the party on Monday, however, said there was nothing to worry about the results as it was an opportunity to internalise the mistake and to work in a more focused manner during the second-phase election.
With 37 lawmakers, the RPP is the fourth largest party in Parliament. However, it secured victory in only one of the 283 local federal units where polling was conducted on May 14. Rastriya Janamorcha, Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party and the newly formed Naya Shakti Nepal have also won one chief seat each so far.
Expressing dissatisfaction over the working style of RPP Chairman Kamal Thapa, a faction led by Prakash Chandra Lohani broke off shortly after the party’s unity convention.
The RPP also formed a committee led by General Secretary Dhurba Bahadur Pradhan for an overall evaluation of the poll results and organisational strength of the party.
“The party directs all Central Working Committee members to be on the field starting May 29 to the end of the election,” read a statement issued by the party.
The meeting believed that its presence is strong in areas where the polls will be held in the second phase. The party eyes a win in Nepalgunj sub-metropolis where it has fielded its vice-chairman Dhawal Sumsher Rana for the mayor’s post. The RPP is also hopeful in Birgunj, which is home to another Vice-chairman Rajib Parajuli.
The party has authorised its district committees to form electoral alliances with other parties as per the need.
