The government on Monday decided to extend the free dialysis service to kidney patients in public hospitals and service centres from the existing twice a week to as many times as required for treatment.
The Curative Service Division under the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) on Monday issued a circular to all concerned hospitals, instructing them to provide free dialysis service to the kidney patients as many times as required.
The decision is in line with the commitments made by the former government, including former health minister Ram Janam Chaudhary, to provide free treatment from all government hospitals from the fiscal year 2016-2017. The government has been providing Rs100,000 to a kidney patient to support dialysis twice a week.
According to doctors, a kidney patient requires dialysis thrice a week and each dialysis costs Rs2,500. At present, 32 hospitals, including
Human Organ Transplant Centre in Bhaktapur and National Kidney Centre, are providing free dialysis service to kidney patients twice a week. Out of the total government hospitals providing the dialysis service, four are zonal hospitals.
