Lalitpur parks to upgrade greenery
Lalitpur Sub-metropolitan City office has decided to allocate Rs 300,000 each for upgrading greenery of three parks in the district.Sub-metropolitan officials said the budget has been allocated for a facelift of Manmohan Park and BP Park in Sundarighat and Sahid Smarak Park in Sanepa.
Pradeep Amatya, environmental engineer at the office, said that the municipality has prioritised environment concerns and would like to see more open spaces due to the ever increasing number of new houses in the district.
The city has been funding maintenance of these parks since 2006. Earlier, these open spaces used to be landfill sites for Kathmandu and Lalitpur. “Seeing the need of open space, we decided to turn this area into a park,” said Amatya.
Locals are relieved to see transformation of the landfill sites into green parks. “Now this park has become a playing space for children and resting place for people,” said Rajendra Thapa Magar, chairman of the Manmohan Park Nirman Bikash Samati.
Monmohan Park spreads in over four ropanis of land, while BP Park has over one ropani of area and Sahid Samarak over four ropanis.
“We are working on plantation in the area. Public participation in maintaining the park after the April earthquake is very encouraging,” said Magar.
CPN-UML senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal is scheduled to participate for the sapling plantation in Monmohan Park next week.
