The local administration and protesters reached an 11-point agreement on Sunday, putting an end to demonstrations staged in Barahathawa, a marketplace in Sarlahi, since Friday.
With the deal, the family of Jaya Shankar Sah, 29, who died during a clash between police and protesters on Friday, have agreed to receive the body. Preparations are underway to take the body of the deceased to the Malangwa-based provincial hospital for post-mortem.
After an all-party discussion at the district administration office, it has been agreed to upgrade the primary health centre to a hospital and hand it over to the Madhesh provincial government and name the hospital after Sah.
The municipality will provide employment to one family member of the deceased, according to the agreement.
Provincial Health Minister Birendra Prasad Singh, municipality chair Kalpana Kumari Katuwal, Chief District Officer Komal Prasad Dhamala, provincial and district security officers, political leaders, representatives of demonstrators and the victim’s family signed the agreement.
Provincial lawmaker Kaushal Kishor Raya said the agreement was reached to conduct a post-mortem and hand it over to the family today.
The situation in the marketplace remained tense throughout Sunday as well despite a curfew order in place.
The local administration extended the curfew but protesters continued demonstrations. They kept the body of the deceased on the streets with them as part of their protest. The demonstrators set a thatched house on the premises of the Barahathawa Area Police Office on fire. Police then lobbed a dozen teargas shells and fired into the air to contain the situation.
The Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday formed a three-member probe committee to investigate the incident. Likewise, the government has announced Rs1 million in compensation to the deceased’s family.
