A woman in Saptari has admitted to killing her two-year-old stepdaughter following a dispute with the girl’s biological mother, police said on Monday.
The girl had been missing since Sunday morning and was found dead later in the day in bushes behind her home at Traffic Chowk, ward 3 of Shambhunath Municipality.
Police detained her stepmother, Muskan Khatun, for questioning after the child disappeared. Saptari District Police Office chief Rupak Khadka said Muskan confessed to killing the girl and leaving her body in the bushes behind the house.
“Muskan has admitted to killing the child,” Khadka told the Post. “She had not been speaking to Rubina for some time because of a dispute. She told us that she killed the girl and threw her body into the bushes behind the house.”
Rubina Khatun is the girl’s biological mother. Police said the two women had stopped speaking to each other following a dispute.
The toddler had been playing outside the family home, near the East-West Highway, until around 9:45am, when she suddenly disappeared. Family members searched for her before informing the Area Police Office in Rupani.
Police said the girl’s body has been sent for a postmortem examination.
Further investigation is under way, and police are preparing to seek an extension of Muskan’s detention on Monday.
The girl’s father is working abroad.
