RSP surges ahead in FPTP and proportional vote counts
Party wins 62 seats and leads in 60 constituencies as Balendra Shah defeats UML chair KP Sharma Oli in Jhapa-5 by nearly 50,000 votes.Post Report
The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) continues to dominate the first-past-the-post (FPTP) vote count, winning 62 seats and leading in 60 other constituencies, according to the latest Election Commission tally.
The Nepali Congress has secured 10 seats and is leading in another 10 constituencies, while CPN-UML has won three seats and is ahead in seven constituencies. The Nepali Communist Party has also won three seats and is leading in five constituencies. The Rastriya Prajatantra Party has won one seat, while the Shram Sanskriti Party is leading in three constituencies. Independent candidate Mahabir Pun has also won one seat.
Among the notable victories, RSP senior leader Balendra Shah achieved a landslide win in Jhapa-5, defeating UML chair and former prime minister KP Sharma Oli by 49,614 votes. Shah secured 68,348 votes, while Oli managed 18,734 votes.
RSP chair Rabi Lamichhane has also been elected from Chitwan-2 with a wide margin, securing 54,402 votes against Nepali Congress candidate Mina Kumari Kharel’s 14,564 votes.
RSP candidate Dr Lekh Jung Thapa claimed a dominant victory in Rupandehi-3 on Saturday, leading to a rare sweep where every other contestant lost their election deposit. None of the remaining 35 candidates, including high-profile representatives from the Congress and UML, reached the 10% valid vote threshold necessary to reclaim their security deposits.
Based on the ongoing proportional representation (PR) vote count nationwide, the Rastriya Swatantra Party is leading with 354,047 votes. The Congress has received 110,204 votes, followed by UML with 88,982 votes and the Nepali Communist Party with 41,853 votes.
The Rastriya Prajatantra Party has secured 27,558 votes, the Shram Sanskriti Party 13,112 votes, and the Rastriya Pariwartan Party (Ujyalo Nepal Party) 8,936 votes. The figures reflect entries from polling centres across the country and remain preliminary.
