The CPN-UML on Thursday urged the government to refrain from taking any decisions with long-term consequences.

Issuing a press statement, UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel drew the attention of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and asked him not to take any decision that would have long-term impacts ‘as the prime minister is not in a position to get a vote of confidence’.

“The government is clearly in the minority as the two major parties in the parliament–the CPN-UML and the Nepali Congress–have reached an agreement to form a national consensus government under the leadership of UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and the UML, the major partner in the current alliance, has withdrawn support to the government and the [party’s] ministers have resigned,” said Pokharel.

“UML draws the attention of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to refrain from taking decisions with long-term impacts as he is not in a position to get a vote of confidence in the current political equation. The party requests him to participate and cooperate in the process of forming a national consensus government.”

The CPN-UML, the largest party in the Dahal-led government until Wednesday, has withdrawn its support following Monday midnight’s political deal with the Nepali Congress.

The UML’s move has rendered the Dahal government in a minority. Now, the prime minister must secure a vote of confidence from Parliament within 30 days to stay in power, but given the current political equation, winning the trust vote is unlikely.
