Nepali Congress has decided to pick its parliamentary party leader on Wednesday morning.
The party’s Election Committee, at a meeting on Monday, took the decision, said Pushpa Bhusal, a member of the committee. According to her, the committee has started the preparatory work to hold the election from 8 am on Wednesday.
“According to the decision of the party’s Work Execution Committee, we have started discussions to complete the election of parliamentary party leader as soon as possible,” Bhusal said. “Preparations are underway to hold elections on Wednesday morning as we are for electing the leader as soon as possible.”
The meeting of the Work Execution Committee on Sunday had formed the three-member Election Committee led by the party’s Joint General Secretary Bhishma Raj Angdembe with Bhusal and another central member Prakash Rasaili Snehi as members.
The Congress is set to pick their parliamentary leader before the lawmakers-elect are sworn in as the President has already called House members for government formation by December 25.
Nepali Congress parliamentary party statute states that if more than one candidate aspires to become the parliamentary party leader, it will be decided through an election process.
Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and General Secretary Gagan Thapa have announced their candidacy for the parliamentary party leadership so far. Another leader Shekhar Koirala is also expected to contest for the post.
The newly-elect 89 lawmakers from Nepali Congress in the House of Representatives are eligible to vote in the election for the post of parliamentary party leader.
