Four of the critically injured passengers in Saturday’s jeep crash in Bajhang have been airlifted to Nepalgunj, while two others have been referred to Kathmandu for further treatment, police said.
The injured passengers were flown out by Nepali Army helicopters after doctors at the Bajhang District Hospital determined that they required specialised care unavailable at the facility.
The crash occurred at ward 7 of Kedarasyun Rural Municipality on Saturday afternoon when a Bolero jeep, travelling from Bungal Municipality to Durgathali Rural Municipality, veered off the road. Three people died at the scene, and 13 others were injured.
Among the critically injured, six people were evacuated on Sunday. Four were taken to Nepalgunj, while two were flown to Surkhet and are being prepared for transfer to Kathmandu, according to police and officials at the Army’s Western Air Base Wing in Surkhet
The injured include Ram Bahadur Mahata, Harkadevi Mahata, Jayamati Devi Mahata and Jhalkadevi Mahata of Durgathali Rural Municipality–6, and Dev Bahadur Dhami of Kedarasyun Rural Municipality–7.
Following the accident, all injured passengers were rescued and taken to Bajhang District Hospital. A Nepali Army helicopter had reached Bajhang on Saturday for emergency evacuation, but could not land near the crash site due to poor weather conditions.
The helicopter later landed at the district headquarters in Chainpur, from where the injured were transported to the hospital by ambulance. After receiving initial treatment, the critically injured passengers were airlifted in batches on Sunday, with two helicopters deployed for the evacuation.
Four other injured passengers are undergoing treatment in Nepalgunj, police said.
