Police detain activist over alleged bid to disrupt March 5 elections.Post Report
Police on Sunday arrested medical entrepreneur and activist Durga Prasain from his residence in Bhaktapur, accusing him of attempting to disrupt the March 5 elections.
Prasain, coordinator of the Nation, nationality, religion, culture and citizens’ grand campaign, had announced a boycott of the polls. He has been detained multiple times in recent weeks.
The Supreme Court released him on Wednesday.
On February 20, the apex court ordered authorities to produce before the court. A single bench of Justice Shreekanta Paudel issued the order while hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Uma Prasain. The court also sought written grounds for his arrest.
Earlier, on February 6, Prasain was released on recognisance after being held by the Cyber Bureau over remarks concerning the elections.
Police have repeatedly detained him on suspicion of preparing a campaign to disrupt the polls. He was also arrested in Pokhara and later released after questioning.
He leads the “Nation, nationality, religion, culture and citizens” grand campaign and had previously been detained on allegations of disseminating misleading information that undermined the credibility of the Election Commission.
