Seven parties protesting the formation of the Madhesh provincial government staged a demonstration outside the provincial assembly building on Saturday, accusing Speaker Ramchandra Mandal of failing to uphold the dignity of his office.
While party cadres marched from Hatiya near the Janakpur Fishery Centre towards the assembly gates, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel blocked them from entering the premises.
However, lawmakers from the same alliance staged a sit-in on the provincial assembly premises, demanding updates on a proposal they had registered against Speaker Mandal for “conduct unbecoming of his office.”
Loktantrik Samajbadi Party lawmaker Upendra Mahato said they reached the assembly secretariat specifically to inquire about the motion filed against the Speaker.
Deputy Speaker Babita Raut Ishar also joined the sit-in, bringing a table and chair to sit alongside the protesting lawmakers.
The parties claim Speaker Mandal acted improperly in proceedings linked to government formation.
They accused him of repeatedly running the assembly meetings on the instructions of one particular party and of “sidelining opposition lawmakers.”
They have demanded corrective steps, warning that the assembly cannot function unless the issue is addressed.
Earlier, leaders of the seven parties met Province Head Surendra Labh Karna on Friday and updated him about their position on the ongoing conflict in the provincial assembly.
The dispute has contributed to escalating tensions around the ongoing political deadlock in Madhesh Province.
