Protesters demanding the restoration of Hindu kingdom vandalised a building and set it on fire at Tinkune, Kathmandu, on Friday. The rally, which was expected to culminate in a gathering, turned violent early, with demonstrators smashing windows of a building along the roadside.
Tensions escalated when protesters attempted to break through the designated security perimeter. They hurled stones at police, prompting security personnel to respond with tear gas.
The protest was led by the Nawaraj Subedi-led joint movement committee, with controversial businessman Durga Prasai mobilising supporters. The Rajendra Lingden-led Rastriya Prajatantra Party also backed the demonstration.
