Kevin Mitchell, the managing director of sector operations at the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), has arrived in Nepal for a week-long visit. He landed in Nepal on Monday.
Mitchell is in Nepal to meet with MCA Nepal and other government officials to support the progress in implementing the MCC-Nepal Compact, the US Embassy in Kathmandu said.
Mitchell brings over 30 years of experience in financial management, planning, analysis, and reporting, having worked in more than 60 countries worldwide. He has also been with the MCC for the past 15 years.
The compact entails the construction of a 315-km 400kV transmission line and the upgrade of a part of the East-West Highway. For this, the MCC is funding $500 million while the Nepal government will be contributing $197 million.
Five segments of transmission lines to be built are—New Butwal-India Border (18km), New Butwal-New Damauli (90km), New Damauli-Ratmate (90km), Ratmate-New Hetauda (58km), and Ratmate-Lapsephedi (59km).
Once completed, these infrastructures are expected to provide a vital missing link for power projects of different river basins to the existing high-voltage grid in Nepal. A part of the grant will be spent on improving road projects.
Nepal signed the MCC Compact in September 2017.
