Eighty-four impoverished Dalit families in Bajura are now hopeful of possessing houses of their own as the government authorities decided to build shelter for them under People’s Housing Programme (PHP).Eighty-four impoverished Dalit families in Bajura are now hopeful of possessing houses of their own as the government authorities decided to build shelter for them under People’s Housing Programme (PHP).
According to the District Coordination Committee (DCC), 50 Dalit families in Constituency A and 34 in Constituency B of Provincial Assembly have been selected for the first phase of the programme. A budget of Rs 10.8 million has been allocated in the current fiscal year for the project.
Although the PHP started in the district from the fiscal year 2016-17, it could not be implemented immediately as the beneficiaries do not have their land to build houses. The Urban Development and Building Construction Division Office prepared working guidelines last year to implement the PHP.
A total of 104 Dalit families applied for building houses under the PHP after the division office urged the impoverished Dalit community for the same. Hikmat Bahadur Rawal, coordination officer at the DCC, said the 84 families were selected in the presence of Sudurpaschim Province’s Internal Affair and Law Minister Prakash Bahadur Shah and province assembly lawmaker from Bajura-B Baladev Regmi.
The Dalit families in Chhatara of Tribeni Municipality, Bahrabisa of Budhuganga Municipality, Dogadi of Khaptad Chhededaha Rural Municipality, Rugin and Bandhu of Himali Rural Municipality and Gotri of Jagannath Rural Municipality will get the houses under the programme. Rajlal Sah, the acting chief of the division office, said the remaining 20 families are on the waiting list.
The housing programme has been implemented in five districts including Bajura in Sudurpaschim Province. The government lunched the PHP to provide housing facility to poor and marginalised people nationwide.
