More than two dozen families have been displaced after a fresh landslide hit Hindung of Ruby Valley Rural Municipality-4 in Dhading.
The landslide, triggered by heavy monsoon rains, swept away a house belonging to Riga Lama, leaving 66 other houses in the settlement at a high risk.
As many as 30 families left their settlement on Monday evening and are taking shelter at a pasture overlooking the village, according to police.
“A police team was sent to the affected area from Sertung on Tuesday morning. The team is expected to reach the village by the evening,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Dipendra Panjiyar. A preliminary investigation suggests that the villagers fled the settlement due to landslide fears, Panjiyar said. There was no human casualty.
Although there are 96 houses in the settlement, around 50 families have been staying in the district headquarters since being displaced by the earthquake in 2015. The devastating quake triggered two massive landslides that gradually cascaded down the settlement.
“The authorities did not heed to our repeated requests to conduct a land survey and recommend whether the settlement needs to be shifted,” Seteman Tamang, a permanent resident of the settlement, told the Post in the district headquarters.
Out the total 96 affected households, only 24 families have received the first tranche of housing reconstruction aid so far. Only two families have built mud-and-stone house.
