Dr Bharat Kumar Yadav has been appointed at Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS), Dr Raj Kumar Rauniyar at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dr Rajendra Wagle at Karnali Academy of Health Sciences (KAHS) and Dr Buddhi Bahadur Thapa has been appointed at Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences.
Dr Yadav was serving as the chief of the emergency department of PAHS while Dr Rauniyar is a professor of radiology at BPKIHS.
Similarly, Dr Wagle is a public health professor at Institute of Medicine, Maharajgunj and Dr Thapa is former medical superintendent of the Western Regional Hospital.
Health Minister Gagan Kumar Thapa confirmed the appointments.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal appointed the VCs at these institutes based on the recommendation of a committee chaired by Health Minister Thapa.
The VC post at PAHS had been vacant since August 23 after Dr Sangita Singh Bhandari completed her term, while KAHS had been without a VC since May 25 when Dr Paras Acharya completed his term as the VC. At BPKIHS, the term of Dr Bala Bhadra Das ended on January 4.
The government appointed vice-chancellor at Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences, which was established in 2015, following pressure from Dr Govinda KC who has staged hunger strikes several times demanding one medical institute in each province.
A three-member committee headed by Minister Thapa, also the pro-chancellor of these institutions, with Health Secretary Dr Senedra Raj Upreti and Dr Geeta Bhakta Joshi, a member of the National Planning Commission as members, had recommended the four names to lead the institutions.
For the first time, the MoH had sought applications to fill the vacant posts of VC in these institutes. The applicants were asked to submit their work plan along with their applications. Over 30 people had applied.
