Locals stop relying on govt, build shelters on their own
Local people of Manekharka in Sindhulpalchok have started to build shelters from corrugated iron sheets after their houses were destroyed by the April 25 Great quake.Rishiram Paudel
Chabang Lama, a local, has already constructed a temporary shelter and is now busy helping his neighbours build the same.
“We are not relying on the government to come and build our shelters,” Lama said in a matter of fact manner.
Similarly, Man Bahadur Tamang of the same village was also seen in a hurry to construct a temporary shelter for his family. He said locals have started to construct temporary shelters on their own after knowing that no one is going to help them in these difficult times.
The situation is pretty similar in Thangpaldhap and Bhotang VDC’s where quake victims were seen building temporary shelters themselves.
They are using some corrugated iron sheets and woods to construct temporary structures for them to live in as they have been devoid of tents and sleeping mats being distributed by the government and other rescue workers. The villagers are even helping each other to construct such make-shift structures.
Dikki Tamang, 72, from Bhotang VDC said that her son, who works in Kathmandu returned home after the quake and immediately started building a temporary shelter for them to live in.
Almost all the people in the village are busy building temporary structures in the wake of the devastating earthquake that has so far taken the lives of over 8,000 people in the country. Some are trying to clear the debris from the road in order to resume vehicular transportation while some are busy constructing shelters.
Forty five persons from Bhotang, Ghunsa, Dhapamkot VDCs have lost their lives in the devastating earthquake of April 25.
