The government has decided to mobilise Nepal Army personnel to open track of 120km road linking China via Gorkha’s Sama Gaun.
The army will open track of the road from Hawa Danda in Lapu VDC to Sama Gaun, according to Uttam Prasad Nagila, joint-secretary at the Ministry of Defence. “Upgradation works, however, will be carried out by the Department of Roads,” he said. “As there are a number of rock faces that need to be blown up using explosives, we have decided to deploy the army.”
Nagila said the tasks of conducting survey and purchasing necessary materials will be conducted in the first phase. The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport Management has allocated the budget for the construction of a road stretch to Larke Bhanjyang via Benighat, Arughat.
According to Nagila, the Defence Ministry has received Rs35 million from the government for the track opening work. “We will soon approve the budget to the army and ask them to start the construction,” he said.
Track opening of a 60km stretch from Benighat to Hawa Dada has been already completed. The army will open track of the remaining 120km. Another road stretch from Chekampar to China border is under construction.
China has already completed the construction of road on its side. Following last year’s trade blockade imposed by India, China has kept the border point open round the year.
