Two children died on Saturday when an improvised explosive device went off at Tilagufa Municipality in Kalikot district.
Chief District Officer Ram Hari Sharma informed that two four-year-old children died while undergoing treatment. One of the victims died while being treated for injuries at the local health post in the municipality while the second victim breathed her last at Surkhet-based Provincial Hospital while receiving treatment.
Sharma said that an investigation is underway to determine if the IED was placed recently or was remnants of the past.
“The police are investigating to find out if the IED is new or old. Preliminary investigation showed that the IED may be a socket bomb as small fragments of metals were found in the blast radius,” said Sharma, in a phone conversation.
Sharma said that the children likely hit the ‘new object’ with a stone out of curiosity leading to the IED exploding.
Local administration informed that the children aged seven, five and three have also sustained serious injuries in the blast.
A Nepal Army helicopter had reached the incident site and had medevaced the injured children to the Surkhet-based Provincial Hospital for treatment, said Sharma.
