Bringing ‘Seto Dharti’ to life
A stage adaptation of the Madan Puraskar-winning novel explores child marriage and women’s silence.Jony Nepal
Kantipur Theatre is presenting the adaptation of Amar Nyaupane’s Madan Puraskar-winning novel, ‘Seto Dharti’, until May 2. This adaptation also marks actress Benisha Hamal’s debut in theatre.
“After 14 years of the book’s publication, the story is being presented as a play, bridging the voices of older generations with the new,” explains Nyaupane in the play’s brochure. “Condensing the novel’s long narrative into an hour and a half is commendable.”
Through the characters Tara, Yamuna, and Pavitra, the issue of child marriage has been brought into the limelight. Director Sundar Dahal explains that the setting and dialogues explore the rhetorical question—“How can any woman live a life like this?”

Benisha Hamal shares that impersonating Tara is not just about acting but also a deep interpersonal experience, one that involves sharing similar pain, silence, and struggles with the character. “The majority of the instances in Tara’s life remain unsaid. However, the very silence holds power in her story,” Hamal writes in the brochure. The audience looks forward to her journey from cinema to theatre, which she describes as a means of understanding her inner self.
According to the theatre’s press release, CEO Prakash Puri said, “Maturity has been seen in her acting during the rehearsal, and we are confident that she will continue to improve.”
Actress Rekha Thapa is the producer of the play.
