Stories of womanhood on the big screen
Nepali and Pakistani films are being screened in Kathmandu as part of the South Asian Feminist Film Festival.Post Report
The South Asian Feminist Film Festival–Film Marathon 2026 is highlighting issues of women’s empowerment and gender equality through cinema. Organised by The Blue Butterfly Foundation in partnership with One Billion Rising (OBR) Nepal 2026, the event is being held today at One Cinemas, Baneshwar, from 10 am to 11:30 am.
One Billion Rising is a global campaign working to end violence against women. Its 2026 theme calls on survivors, activists and artists to rise for their bodies, their future and the earth.
The screening features two South Asian feminist films. One of them, ‘Unspoken Bond’ (2023), is a Nepali documentary-style film that explores themes of motherhood, resilience and women’s inner struggles. Based on real-life events, the film tells the story of an elderly mother and her deep bond with her two intellectually disabled daughters. ‘Unspoken Bond’ is dedicated to mothers and people with disabilities.
The second film, ‘Saving Face’ (2012), is an Oscar-winning Pakistani documentary that follows acid-attack survivors as they navigate the challenges of seeking justice and rebuilding their lives amid social and systemic barriers. The film also received an Emmy.
The screening is free to attend, though seating is limited.
