Finding meaning in moments of doubt
‘Maybe It Will All Work Out’ traces a photographer’s journey, using film photography and darkroom prints.Mokshyada Thapa
Siddhartha Art Gallery presents a photographic exhibition, ‘Maybe It Will All Work Out’, by Safal Shrestha from May 3 to 7.
The exhibition’s title holds personal meaning for the photographer, reflecting a period of uncertainty regarding his career; this experience ultimately inspired the name.
Rather than portraying images in a narrated format, the prints display memories of his time in New York.
“My time in New York and the works I did there became such a crucial part of my photography journey; I wanted to depict that through this exhibition,” says Shrestha.
Altogether, there are 25 photographic prints that mostly capture people, pairing the emotional depth of portraiture with the rawness of street backdrops.
“I like to think of my photographs as reflections of what I see within people. For me, it is how I express myself when words do not suffice,” reads the artist statement.
The medium he uses is quite atypical for the Nepali audience, as he uses film photography, mainly 35 mm. After taking pictures, he hand-printed some of the photos in a darkroom, a process that requires considerable time and effort, unlike conventional printing. Similarly, the exhibit consists of silver gelatin darkroom prints and colour-negative handprints.
