Play ‘e Thibeu!’, inspired by the Kirant myth of Thibiya, is currently being staged at Shilpee Theatre until February 14, except on Tuesdays, with two shows held every Saturday.
Directed by Bedana Kheresungma Rai and written by Geelu Ratos, the production draws from the Kirant belief that the bird Thibiya, also known as Subiu, Sibi and Simikwa, was once a human mother who lost her only son, Thibe, to a river.
The play narrates her lifelong search across forests, hills and rivers, where her repeated call of “Thibeu... Thibeu...” symbolises eternal maternal grief and hope.
Through this myth, the production examines themes of motherhood, loss and the deep relationship between humans and nature, while raising questions about environmental responsibility and survival.
It also brings patriarchy into focus, questioning its concealed presence in social structures.
