Heat rises across Tarai as westerly wind weakens
Meteorologists say Madhesh and Koshi provinces are likely to see hot conditions today as rain-bearing systems weaken, with only isolated showers expected in some areas.Post Report
The influence of westerly winds has weakened, leading to a rise in temperatures across the country, especially in the Tarai plains of Madhesh and Koshi provinces, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said.
The department has urged people in these areas to take necessary precautions as hot conditions are expected during the day.
Officials said the westerly low-pressure system in the upper atmosphere and local wind patterns are still present over Nepal. However, the system that had been bringing regular rainfall in recent days has now weakened.
Senior meteorologist Min Kumar Aryal said there is no possibility of heavy rainfall for the next two to three days, though scattered showers may occur in some places tomorrow and the day after.
According to the department, skies will be generally cloudy in the hills and mountains today, while the Tarai will see partly cloudy conditions.
There is also a chance of moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in a few places in the hills and in one or two locations in the Tarai of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces. Some snowfall is also possible in the mountains.
The department has forecast maximum temperatures of 36–38°C in Simara, and 37–39°C in Biratnagar and Janakpur.
Climate expert Dharam Raj Uprety said a reduction in pre-monsoon activity could lead to less rainfall and more heat in the Tarai, affecting schools, agricultural workers, and vulnerable groups such as women, children, and labourers.
