The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) has warned of serious action against those who resist the government’s decision to break a transport syndicate.
The warning comes just a day after the transport operators that run buses along the Araniko Highway threatened to enforce a vehicular strike to oppose the DoTM’s decision to issue route permit to Mayur Yatayat.
“The government has spent billions to build roads. It’s up to the government to decide who gets the route permit, and if anyone tries to oppose the government, they will have to deal with the law,” DoTM Director General Rupnarayan Bhattarai said
on Friday.
The DoTM on March 15 had issued Mayur Yatayat the route permit to operate 24 buses from Kalanki to Banepa. The decision has caused an uproar among the transport operators of that route. They want to maintain their monopoly over the Araniko Highway by barring competition.
There are 13 transport operators that run bus service along the highway. On Thursday, they submitted a memo to the chief district officers of Kavre and Bhaktapur districts, demanding to stop Mayur Yatayat buses plying on their route.
This is not the first time these bus operators have threatened a strike to bar a new transport company. Last August, the transport operators of Kavre had threatened to block Sajha Yatayat’s plan to extend its service.
