A special puja was held to honour the opening of mandap-shaped nine-pit foundation Kashthamandap that was flattened by the earthquake last year.
The special puja was performed by Pancha Buddha (five Buddhist monks) and assisted by 180 Guruju and Gurumaju (male and female Newar Buddhist people).
The historic Kashthamandap temple was said to have been built from the wood of a single saal (Shorea robusta) tree.
The special puja was held once the archaeologists from the Department of Archaeology (DoA), Government of Nepal and Durham University of the UK last month carried out an archaeological study of the foundation of the temple, which was built in 7th century. “The new excavation has shown that before the Kashthamandap temple was built, it was a place for Buddha’s meditation,” said Rajendra Man Bajracharya, chairman of Vajrayana Mahasang. Kasthamandap is one of the oldest among the monuments of the Valley.
